What to know first
- Use the current official earnings threshold.
- Minijob workers still have employment rights.
- Multiple jobs can change the classification.
- International residents must confirm that their status permits the work.
Use the exact 2026 earnings levels
From 1 January 2026, regular average earnings up to €603 per month fall within the Minijob earnings limit. At the 2026 minimum wage of €13.90 gross per hour, that corresponds to about 43.38 hours per month, or roughly 10 hours per week.
The Midijob transition zone runs from €603.01 to €2,000 gross per month. Employees are covered by all branches of social insurance, but the employee contribution begins reduced and rises progressively. Above €2,000, ordinary social-insurance calculation applies; this is not a separate income-tax bracket.
- €0–€603/month: Minijob earnings limit
- €603.01–€2,000/month: Midijob transition zone with reduced employee contributions
- Above €2,000/month: normal social-insurance calculation up to the relevant contribution ceilings
- €13.90/hour: statutory minimum wage from 1 January 2026
- €12,348/year: 2026 income-tax basic allowance for a single assessment; taxable income is not the same as gross salary
Read it like any employment contract
Check the employer, duties, place of work, hourly rate, expected hours, scheduling, holiday, sickness reporting, probation, and notice. Keep your own time record and payslips.
A Minijob label does not remove minimum employment protections. If the practical arrangement differs from the contract, ask for clarification in writing.
Check your wider situation
Students, pensioners, people with a main job, and international residents can face different interactions with insurance, tax, or residence conditions. Use the official calculator and guidance, then ask the responsible institution about your facts.
Do not assume a Minijob automatically provides comprehensive health insurance or permission to work.
